Survey of strawberry viruses in fragaria x annanasa and fragaria chiloensis in the viii region. Fitopatologia. 40:148. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: In April 2004, a survey was conducted of strawberry plants with symptoms in two areas (Los Angeles and Contulmo) of Chilean Region VIII. Three types of plantings were sampled: nurseries, commercial fields of Fragaria annanasa and commercial fields of Fragaria chiloensis. Nursery plants were sampled in the Los Angeles area. In the Contulmo area, fields of both F. annanasa and F. chiloensis were sampled. Each sample was tested serologically by ELISA for the following viruses: SMYEV, SNSV, FCILV, RspRV and ToRSV and were also tested by RT-PCR for SCV, SMoV, SMYEV, SVBV, SLRSV, SPaV, BPYV, SNSV, FCILV, ArMV and RspRV. THe most common virus found in these samples in both strawberry species was SMYEV (66%), followed by SCV (30%), FCILV (23%), SVBV (20% only in F. chiloensis) and SMoV (13%, primarily in F. chiloensis). We did not find any plants infected with SLRSV, SPaV, BPYV, SNSV, ArMV, RspRV or ToRSV. Among the samples tested, 74% were infected with at least one virus and plants were found containing as many as five viruses. Abstract in Spanish, Translation by R.H. Converse. |
