Notes on south american dasyomma, with the description of a remarkable new species from Chile (diptera: athericidae). Zootaxa. 1443:29-35. Interpretive Summary: Biting flies cause many millions of dollars in economic costs to man and livestock every year, primarily due to disease transmission. Some snipe flies are known to bite man and animals. This paper presents some new information on biting snipe flies from South America, describing one new species, redescribing another species and its female. This information will be of use to scientists who need to identify these flies, as well as action agencies such as USDA-APHIS that need to identify flies intercepted at U.S. ports of entry. Technical Abstract: A new species of Dasyomma Macquart, D. chrysopilum sp. nov., is described from Chile (Malleco and Ñuble Provinces). This species differs from all other known species in having dense golden pilosity on the abdominal tergites of both sexes. Dasyomma basale Malloch is redescribed, with the female described for the first time. |
