Interpretive Summary: A survey of turkey processing facilities across the U.S. was conducted to determine the average water use per bird, amount of water reuse/recycling and type of antimicrobial treatment. Nearly 27% of the surveys that were sent out were completed and returned. The majority (52%) of the responses were from Indiana (16%), Missouri (12%), Pennsylvania (12%) and Virginia (12%). Most of facilities that responded to the survey reported operating 5 days each week using city water (85%), and most (77%) reported discharging wastewater through the city sewer system. Average water usage per turkey was found to be approximately 30 gallons per bird which includes a 23% increase in water usage after the implementation of HACCP. Approximately 92% of the respondents use a cage/truck washing station. Thirty-one percent of the facilities reported that they recycle water. Data from the present survey may be of interest to turkey processing facilities interested in establishing water conservation programs. Key Words: Poultry, turkey processing, poultry processing water
