Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Functional fluids are those whose molecules comprise distinctly separated polar and non-polar segments. The presence of the polar segments allow these fluids to be used in lubrication processes that occur in boundary, hydrodynamic, and mixed film regimes. Non-functional fluids on the other hand, are devoid of functional groups and cannot be employed in lubrication processes occurring in boundary regimes. Vegetable oils, because of their mono-glycride, triglyceride, and other polar groups, are an important class of functional fluids. As such, they can be employed in lubrication processes that occur in all three lubrication regimes mentioned above. In this work, the EHL properties of vegetable oil functional fluids will be discussed relative to those of non-functional, petroleum-based hydrocarbon fluids.
