Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Field studies evaluated dissipation of herbicides from low density polyethylene mulch (LDPM). Herbicide dissipation was measured under dry conditions and following irrigation events. Halosulfuron, paraquat, carfentrazone, glyphosate, and oxyfluorfen were applied to black 1.5-mil LDPM at concentrations equivalent to 1X rates. LDPM was harvested 1 hour after treatment (HAT) then sampled up to 5 consecutive rain-free (RF) days after treatment (DAT) to determine the level of herbicide. In a separate experiment, treated LDPM was harvested 1 HAT, then washed off (WO) with sprinkler irrigation (1 cm), sampled 3 HAT, then the same wash and sampling procedure repeated for 5 consecutive DAT (days after treatment). Halosulfuron recovery was 65% at 5 DAT. After 1 WO, 36, 20, 14, 11, and 6% was recovered at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 DAT. Paraquat recovery was 52, 31, 21, 14, and 9% at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 DAT for the RF study. In contrast, a single irrigation washed all paraquat from the LDPM. Glyphosate recovery was 80 and 50% at 1 and 5 DAT. Similar to paraquat, glyphosate recovery was <3% after 1 WO. Carfentrazone recovery was 10 to 40% at 1HAT to 4 DAT for both RF and WO studies indicating carfentrazone adsorption to LDPM, with subsequent release with each wash off event. After 1 WO event, 98% of oxyfluorfen remained on LDPM. Oxyfluorfen recovery for RF and WO studies linearly declined from 50 to 6% by 4 DAT indicating adsorption to the LDPM.
