Interpretive Summary: Many species of soldier flies are beneficial to agriculture in that the larvae help to decompose plant material, although a few species are known to attack living plants, such as grass roots. The information contained in this publication provides an overview of those species that have aquatic or semi-aquatic larvae for a general book on aquatic organisms. This publication will be valuable to other scientists as well as personnel involved in water quality research and policy.

Technical Abstract: A general summary is provided of the world fauna of Stratiomyidae that have life histories that are aquatic or semi-aquatic. 870 species, found worldwide, have or are speculated to have larvae that live in ponds, rivers, streams, and more transient water sources.
