Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Inadequate intakes of vitamin D in combination with limited sun exposure can have adverse effects on the skeleton. A recent study in institutionalized subjects demonstrated the value of spending 10 minutes per day in the sun, exposing only face, hands and arms. After one year, subjects with this level of sun exposure had reduced bone loss, fewer falls and fewer fractures than subjects in the control group. This study reminds us of the consequences of ignoring vitamin D deficiency and demonstrates an effective, low-cost, and safe approach to correcting it. |
