Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: We have synthesized useful non-ionic surfactants from commercially available methyl oleate and glycerol using a simple epoxide route. The base catalyzed reaction of epoxidized methly oleate (EMO) with glycerol was shown to give a variety of product which displayed different surfactant properties. Aqueous final surface tensions of <35 nM/m were observed using either bubble pressure tensiometry or the Denouy ring method. Critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the .01% to .005% range were observed, and followed the expected trend of a lower critical micelle concentration with increasing hydrophobicity. Our findings are useful in the development of improved glycerol based oleochemical surfactants.
