Notice of release of W-311 and W-361, multiple pest-resistant orange-fleshed sweetpotato breeding lines. USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Washington, DC, January 5, 2007. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] breeding lines W-311 and W-361 were developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), and Clemson University. Although there are several sweetpotato cultivars and breeding lines with multiple resistances to root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita) and insect pests like Diabrotica and Systena, none have roots with the dark copper skin like the leading U.S. cultivar Beauregard. After putting a major emphasis on the deelopment of parent lines that have dark copper skin, two advanced breeding lines have been selected as polycross parents that combine commerical traits like dark copper skin and medium orange flesh with multiple pest resistance. Although both lines do not have all traits needed to be commerical cultivars, they ahve been used successfully as parents in polycross nurseries for a number of years. Many insect and disease resistant seedlings with used as maternal parents. The roots W-311 and W-361 keep well in controlled storage. The bedded roots of both breeding lines sprout rapidly in the spring and plant production per bushel of seed roots is adequate for commerical production. |
