Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Soil Moisture Experiment 2004 (SMEX04) and Soil Moisture Experiment 2005 (SMEX05) were conducted to test algorithms in support of Aqua AMSR-E and the future HYDROS mission. Vegetation Water Content is a major uncertainty for retrieval of soil moisture from microwave data, and MODIS shortwave infrared reflectances may be used to estimate vegetation water content to reduce the uncertainty. SMEX04 was conducted in Arizona and Sonora in collaboration with the North American Monsoon Experiment, where there multiple vegetation types in rugged terrain. SMEX05 was conducted in central Iowa in preparation for the North American Carbon Program, where the vegetation types were corn, soybean and gallery forests. The data from SMEX04 are archived at the National Snow and Ice Data Center and the data from SMEX05 are being analyzed.
