Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The timing and rate of genome variation induced by allopolyploidization in cereals was analyzed in the intergeneric wheat/rye hybrid triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analyses. The results showed that allopolyploidization induced considerable sequence variation and that most of the genome variation occurred immediately following wide hybridization. The sequence variation that occurred after chromosome doubling involved small continuous modifications as compared to the massive amount of variation that occurred before chromosome doubling. However, the rate of sequence variation in the wheat/rye hybrid indicated that the variation involving the rye parental genome was much higher than that in wheat, and occurred in the first few generations following chromosome doubling rather than in any subsequent generations. The rate of variation in repetitive sequences was much higher than that in low-copy sequences. The analyses also suggested that cytoplasm and the parental genomes relationship were key factors in determining the direction, amount, timing, and rate of genome sequence variation occurring during intergeneric alloployploidization in cereals.
