Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This article discusses in general terms the potential, needs, and progress in applying modern tools of biology towards developing strategies to identify sugar beet genes of agronomic importance. Developing new tests for specific agronomic traits is needed that are independent of field evaluations, and such tests need to be validated under field conditions. DNA sequence information is helping to develop markers and identify genes. ARS is working to these goals by creating new knowledge, biological tools, and germplasm to enhance the value of sugar beet as a crop.
