Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), which is a co-product of the ethanol processing industry, is rich in protein and is primarily used as animal feed. During the fermentation process, most of the carbohydrate is converted into ethanol, which leads to problems in forming these residues into pellets during extrusion processing. Protein-rich whey has very good binding properties, and could possibly improve the extrusion process. Three fish feed formulations containing 28% protein were prepared with DDGS (20%, 30%, 40%), corn flour, soy flour, vitamin mix and mineral mix. These fish feed formulations were extruded in a single screw extruder with 5% whey protein and without whey protein. The trials were conducted at a constant barrel temperature of 120°C. The ingredient blends were extruded at 15, 20, and 25% feed moisture content and 100, 130 and 160 rpm screw speed. Extrudate analysis included pellet durability, expansion ratio, bulk density, true density, porosity, and color. Significant improvement in pellet durability was observed during extrusion of fish feed with whey protein.
