Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: AWPM for wheat is an IPM program involving multiple tactics, some of which work best when implemented over multiple farm fields or even multiple farms. The backbone of ‘AWPM for Wheat’ is the use of greenbug and Russian wheat aphid resistant wheat varieties, and the use of diversified cropping systems, where two or more crops are grown in rotation. The most common cropping systems practiced in the target region of AWPM for Wheat are continuous wheat or wheat-fallow. The choice of continuous wheat or wheat fallow depends on where along the east-west rainfall gradient in the Great Plains suppression area of AWPM for Wheat the particular farm occurs. Diversified cropping often increases grower profits, decreases economic risk, and improves aphid pest management by relaying key natural enemies from crop to crop within the cropping system. The program will also focus on increasing adoption of information intensive IPM tools that have been developed and refined during the last decade, such as dynamic economic thresholds for the Russian wheat aphid and greenbug, time efficient pest sampling schemes, and IPM decision support systems. We are also working to develop and implement area-wide greenbug and Russian wheat aphid monitoring based in multi-spectral remote sensing methods. |
