Technical Abstract: Research Highlights at the Cereal Disease Laboratory -- 1) African Stem Rust: Seedling evaluations of wheat against a new African stem rust race showed that more than 80% of the U.S. hard red spring wheat varieties and advanced breeding lines and that 84% of wheat varieties released from CIMMYT are susceptible. 2) Puccinia graminis genome project: Genome sequencing is completed, a restriction fingerprint map is being created, and two EST libraries have been constructed. 3) Wheat and barley scab fungus population genetics: Surveys of MN and ND wheat fields in 2003 showed that the new 3ADON chemotype is more widespread and at a higher frequency than found previously. 4) Fusarium graminearum genomics project: A Fusarium microarray has been developed and is being used to study the expression profile of Fusarium genes in plants of Morex barley at 24, 48, 72, 96, and 144 hrs post-inoculation. This will provide information on genes that are critical for pathogenicity at specific stages of disease development. 5) 2004 wheat leaf rust race summary: Fifty races of wheat leaf rust were identified in our 2004 survey. A new race of leaf rust with virulence to almost all currently grown durum wheat cultivars was found in Mexico and has spread to durum fields in the Imperial Valley of California. 6) Proposal for a Regional Leaf Rust Nursery: A survey of wheat breeders indicated an interest in increased testing of germplasm for adult plant resistance to leaf rust in southern and eastern soft red wheats.
