Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A research project was established in East Central Florida communities of Melbourne (Brevard County) and Port Saint Lucie (St. Lucie County) to assess the seasonal activity of pink hibiscus mealybug (PHM) using sticky traps baited with a new synthetic pheromone. The residual activity of synthetic pheromone was also assessed. Trapping was initiated during April 2004 in Port St. Lucie and during April 2005 in Melbourne. In Port St. Lucie, PHM males were relatively abundant from June through November 2004 with peak activity during July 2004. Few adult males were collected at traps at this location during April-May 2004 or during January-April 2005. Activity of PHM males during April-May 2005 was similar in Port St. Lucie and Melbourne and paralleled activity observed during the same time period during 2004 in Port St Lucie. Lures deployed in traps during October 2004 in Port St. Lucie were as effective during May 2005 as lures deployed during February 2005, indicating a residual period of activity of greater than seven months.
