Citation: Krueger, R. 2005. Management of citrus germplasm/manejo de germoplasma. Memorias, IX Simposio Internacional de Citricultura: Sanidad y.

Interpretive Summary: Germplasm refers o the propagative tissue containing genetic information that is passed to progeny. In the case of citrus, particularly at the production level, this generally refers to budwood and/or seeds. Collections of Germplasm are mainatained by genebanks and certification programs. The goals of these programs are different. Genebanks generally mainatain collections of many different genotypes that are distributed in limited quantities to researchers, while certification programs maintain a lower number of genotypes that are distributed to producers in large quantities. Management of both types of collections involves aquisition, maintainance, distribution, quality assurance, and documentation. Many of the management practices are concerned with the maintainance of the phytosanitary status of the items maintained, while others are involved with maintainance of the specific identity of the items. Some issues and practices are discussed in the body of the paper.

Technical Abstract: Germplasm refers to living tissue containing genetic information that can be used to propagate future generations of plants. In the case of citrus, this usually refers to buds or seeds. Collections of different types of genotypes of citrus are maintained by genebanks for scientific use and by certification programs for use by a commercial industry.Management of these collections is similar and involves acquisition, maintainance, distribution, quality assurance, and documentation. Most of the management practices are involved with maintaining the phytosanitary status of the material and ensuring that it is true-to-type. Some of the management practices utilized are briefly outlined.
