Good Fruit Grower. 56(11):8-9 Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: With increased international trade, importing countries are concerned about receiving invasive insect pests along with fresh agricultural commodities. Formerly, single postharvest chemical treatments, such as fumigations, have been used, but these are being restricted by international agreements. The Systems Approach can be a viable replacement where normal commercial operations and compatible procedures can accumulatively reduce the incidence of a pest below quarantine threshold levels. These components include: field control, cold storage, cleaning, sorting and culling, and noninvasive detection. Intensive inspections validate the efficacy of the Systems Approach. |
