Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: We are interested in learning more about the proteome of Uromyces appendiculatus, the causal agent of common bean rust. The knowledge of the proteins that form uredospores, germlings, appressoria, and haustoria may be used to define host-pathogen interactions or serve as targets for chemical inhibition of the fungus. We have used liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in a high-throughput fashion to identify ~400 proteins from uredospores and have defined a set of proteins that are specific to the surface of the spores. An abundance of heat-shock proteins and transcription factors portends a spore’s ability to survive stresses and jump-start gene transcription and protein production during germination.
