Technical Abstract: Alteration of soybean seed composition to meet the requirements of functional foods has been carried out for many years and some achievements have been attained. As the seed composition is altered by conventional breeding or by biotechnology, seed germination and subsequent seedling vigor might decrease, which has been demonstrated in soybean seeds selected for increased oleic acid and for elimination of phytate. To understand the effects of seed component alteration on germination and post-germinative growth, we are investigating soybean seed storage reserve digestion and its regulation. In this study, we analyzed the changes of amounts and profiles of proteins, oils and phytate in cotyledons during post-germinative growth under different conditions. We evaluated the influence of different seed and growth condition treatments on seed storage reserve digestion. Activities of some enzymes associated with storage reserve digestion were assayed.
