Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Vitamin D metabolism still remains an exciting area of research with much more to be learned. Critical questions remain unanswered regarding complete elucidation of the vitamin D2 metabolic pathway, and species differences between vitamins D2 and vitamin D3 metabolism are still virtually unexplored. The introduction of vitamin D analogs has also resulted in a totally different set of issues regarding their metabolism, tissue kinetics, mechanism of action, and potential therapeutic uses. This review focuses on the general control and function of key enzymes involved in the regulation of vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 metabolism. Species differences in vitamin D metabolism, as well as vitamin D toxicity, are also discussed. The information will be of particular interest and importance to veterinary and human medical researchers.
