Cast Films: Optimization of packagng properties. 2004. BioEnvironmental Polymer Society International Meeting in Monterrey, Mexico, December 5-10, 2004. Paper No. 52 (Abstract). Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Films and coatings from renewble polymers offer an attractive alternative to synthetic materials for packaging applications. Despite some challenges with respect to their performance and stability, these materials remain highly desirable due to the fact that they are naturally renewable and biodegradable. Cast films were prepared from anionic starch/ chitosan/ nano-clays in the presence of polyethylene glycol as a plasticizer. Resulting polymeric nanocomposites exhibited improved properties. These properties include improved modulus, increased thermal stability, and decreased gas and water permeability. Results will be presented to show our efforts to optimize properties of such films. |
