Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A molecular cloning strategy involving primer-directed reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of 5' and 3' cDNA ends (5' and 3' RACE) was developed to sequence 1300 bp of a turkey liver-derived cDNA corresponding to the complete coding region and the 5'- and 3'-untranslated regions of the turkey insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II mRNA transcript. The turkey IGF-II gene codes for a 187 amino acid pre-proprotein that includes a signal peptide, the mature IGF-II hormone, and a C-terminal extension peptide comprised of 24, 67 and 96 amino acids, respectively. Turkey IGF-II showed greater than 95% sequence identity at both the nucleotide and amino acid level with chicken IGF-II. This sequence data confirmed the existence of the IGF-II gene in turkeys. Such data will be useful in studying the structure and expression of the turkey IGF-II gene, as well as, in further defining the function of the IGF-II hormone in this poultry species.
