Technical Abstract: Ionizing radiation is a safe and effective method for inactivating foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms in finfish and aquatic invertebrates such as mollusks, crustacea, and echinoderms. Standard guides written by internationally recognized metrological organizations such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Subcommittee E10.06 on Food Irradiation Processing and Packaging are used by governments and the food processing industry to provide information and reference materials pertaining to critical food safety issues and to conduct appropriate product assessments. ASTM Standard Guide F1736-03 "Standard guide for irradiation of finfish and aquatic invertebrates used as food to control pathogens and spoilage microrganisms" addresses issues including terminology, significance and use, harvest, packaging, pre-irradiation product handling, irradiation, post-irradiation handling, and labeling associated with radiation processing of seafood products.
