Technical Abstract: This research investigates the reinforcement effect of defatted soy flour in elastomers. Defatted soy flour is an abundant renewable material and is economically more favorable than soy protein isolate. Defatted soy flour contains both soy protein aggregate and soy carbohydrate. SEM indicates protein aggregates are embedded in a film-like soy carbohydrate matrix. Dry flour is a rigid material and is suitable as a reinforcement phase in elastomers. The reinforcement effect as indicated by shear elastic modulus is greater in the composites reinforced by defatted soy flour than by soy protein isolate. The recovery behaviors investigated by dynamic shear strain experiments indicate the composites filled with defatted soy flour have better recovery in their modulus values. In the small strain region, thermal mechanical studies indicate a significant increase in the elastic modulus of composites above the glass transition temperature.
