Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Wind erosion has long been a problem in eastern Washington and northeastern Oregon. The USDA-ARS Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) is a process-based model that simulates wind erosion and dust emissions from agricultural soils, but it has not been validated in the Pacific Northwest. The purpose of this study was to validate WEPS based upon field data collected over three years. A 9-ha field site in eastern Washington, maintained in continuous summer fallow, was instrumented to measure soil loss and PM10 (particulates less than 10 micrometers) concentrations. Soil physical properties and weather were also monitored at the field site. Results will be presented that highlight comparisons between simulated and observed soil loss and PM10 emissions using WEPS.
