Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The effect of successive waste treatment stages involving solids removal, nitrification-denitrification, and phosphorus removal on the malodorous volatile compounds of swine waste liquid slurries were examined. Preliminary headspace comparison of raw manure flushed from swine housing and treatment system effluent showed a reduction of over 90% in the levels of p-cresol, p-ethylphenol, indole and skatole from the wastewater treatment stream and a 75% reduction in the levels of phenol. Subsequent solid-phase extraction of liquid wastes measured 17 compounds at each stage of the treatment process. The greatest reduction in malodorous compounds occurred in the first denitrification stage with an over 50% reduction in the levels of phenol and indole and greater than 90% removal of p-cresol, p-ethylphenol and skatole. The efficiency of the waste treatment system in terms of odor, BOD and solids removal is discussed.
