Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The use of controlled or modified atmospheres in warehouses, mills, and processing plants is reviewed and discussed. The efficacy of modified atmospheres, which typically involves creation of a low-oxygen environment, is well-established and considerable data are available for stored-product insects. Achieving an atmosphere of 1% oxygen will kill all life stages of the majority of the common pests. Most current research is focused on practical methods for using controlled atmospheres in specialty situations as opposed to large-scale treatments.
