Rapid communication: Mapping of the prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2) gene to porcine chromosome 9 and bovine chromosome 16 by linkage analysis using novel PCR-RFLP. Journal of Animal Science. 77(3):787-788. Interpretive Summary: Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2) is the rate limiting enzyme in the synthesis of prostaglandins. Disruption of PTGS2 in mice was found to cause failure in female reproductive processes that include ovulation, fertilization and implantation of embryos. Because of its role in reproduction, PTGS2 is a gene candidate for traits related to reproduction in livestock. Technical Abstract: Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 is the rate-limiting enzyme in the stimulated synthesis of prostaglandins, and is also involved in the synthesis of thromboxanes and prostacyclin. Knocking out the PTGS2 gene in mice was found to disrupt reproduction through multiple failures in female reproductive processes that include ovulation, fertilization, implantation, and decidualization. The PTGS2 gene has recently been mapped to human chromosome 1q25.2'1q25.3 (HSA1; GDB accession number D28235). Of the genes previously mapped to HSA1, several map to SSC4 (F13B, ATP1B1, and ILV), and others map to SSC9 (MYOG and CR2). Mapping of PTGS2 to SSC9, therefore, clarifies an evolutionary breakpoint in HSA1 in relation to SSC4 and SSC9. Of the genes previously mapped to HSA1, several map to bovine chromosome 16 (ABL2, AT3, MYOG, PIGR, and CR2). |
