Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Citrus blight is a chronic decline disease of citrus which removes 5-10 percent of the trees from production annually in Florida and Brazil, respectively. In the northern citrus area of Costa Rica, trees are undergoing a decline having symptoms similar to the symptoms associated with citrus blight; the decline is spreading and removing about 6 percent of the trees from production yearly. Diagnostic tests indicate the declining trees have citrus blight as determined by the accumulation of zinc in the trunk wood, reduced water uptake, and the presence of the 12 kD blight associated protein. This is the first report of citrus blight in Costa Rica.
