Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Recent advances in genomic research have lead to the development of novel techniques that provide valuable insight into the genes being expression in specific tissues or during a specific life-stage. Expression studies of the insect genome, using expressed sequence tags, EST, can be used to identify genes which are producing proteins necessary for normal insect physiology and development including those involved in wing formation, digestion, cuticle synthesis and egg production. Armed with this information, we are able to develop pest management strategies that will 'down-regulate' gene expression thereby reducing or stopping the action of the targeted genes. Novel strategies such as these are aimed at reducing insect pest populations through the disruption of their normal biological processes.
