Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Researchers in Ohio have developed a drainage water recycling approach that is called Wetland, Reservoir, SubIrrigation System, or WRSIS. This system directs surface runoff and subsurface drainage water to a constructed wetland where there is opportunity for some sediment and nutrient removal from the water. As the water leaves the wetland, it is moved to a storage reservoir where it remains until released to meet crop water needs, in this case using the subsurface drainage system to distribute the water through subirrigation. The system is in use on two private farming enterprises and the farmers are very pleased with both the economic aspects of the system and the associated wildlife habitat that the wetland provides. WRSIS has enhanced crop productivity especially during drier growing seasons, with average yield increase of 48% for corn and 40% for soybeans.
