Technical Abstract: This brief review of microwave and radio-frequency power considerations in agriculture includes potential applications for insect control, seed treatment to improve germination, conditioning of products to improve nutrition or keeping quality, treatment of soil to control pests, and treatments to control plant pathogens and reduce bacterial populations on sprouting seed. Although some applications appear feasible, the unit value of many agricultural commodities is too low to justify the necessary investment in RF and microwave equipment.
