Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica) is one of the worst weeds of the world, most especially in southern and eastern Asia and in the lowland moist savannahs of West and Central Africa. It is also found in Europe, North America, Central America, South America, and Oceania. It occupies a wide variety of habitats including grassland, cultivated annual crops, plantations, abandoned farmland, road and railway embankments, reclaimed mined areas, pine and hardwood forests, recreational areas and deforested areas. Cogongrass is a native of the Old World but has spread to other parts of the world through accidental and intentional introductions. Once introduced, cogongrass has the ability to dominate vast areas of land or out compete crops because it is a prolific seed producer, it exudes allelopathic chemicals and it can produce an extensive rhizome system. Cogongrass is known all over the world for its negative impact on the economy, environment, biodiversity and society.
