Interpretive Summary: Flies are very abundant and diverse, and many of them are pests. Dolichopodid flies (family Dolichopodidae) are poorly known, but adults and larvae are predaceous and help control insect pests, including bark beetles. This publication describes a new species from South America, the first report of the genus Harmstonia from that continent. This information will be of use to scientists, regulators and other workers interested in identifying flies, and also biodiversity scientists interested in the South American fauna.

Technical Abstract: A new dolichopoidid fly, Harmstonia ichiloi new species, is described from Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia. This is the first report of the genus Harmstonia from South America.
