Technical Abstract: Current control measures against coccidiosis rely heavily upon prophylactic medication costing the poultry industry tremendously. Existing coccidia vaccines consisting mostly of live oocysts have limited effectiveness and new control strategies are needed. Short oligodeoxynucleotides containing unmethylated CpG motifs (CpG ODNs) represent potential candidate vaccine adjuvant. We have demonstrated that CpG ODNs stimulate chicken macrophages to secrete nitric oxide and IL-6 in vitro, and exert a positive effect on weight loss and oocyst shedding associated with Eimeria infection when injected in vivo. We will report new data of our CpG in ovo vaccination studies against Eimeria.
