Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Phakopsora pachyrhizi causes soybean rust, which is the most devastating foliar disease in many soybean production areas around the world. The infection process was examined by comparing approximately 12,000 expressed sequences tags (ESTs) generated from three stage-specific unidirectional cDNA libraries from P. pachyrhizi. The EST cDNA libraries were constructed using mRNA isolated from urediniospores germinating on a water surface for 16 h and from infected soybean leaf tissue at 6-8 and 13-15 days post inoculation. Intercellular hyphal growth and the peak of sporulation occur at 6-8 and 13-15 days, respectively. The ESTs were analyzed for redundancy within and among the three libraries, and they were classified according to putative function based on similarity to known proteins using the Blast sequence algorithms. These ESTs will provide insight into the biochemical and physiological processes that are necessary for infection, survival and reproduction.
