Technical Abstract: Avian influenza (AI) is caused by type A orthomyxovirus. Both low (LP) and high pathogenicity (HP) forms of AI exist. HPAI impacts international trade as does some forms of LPAI. Clinical features of AI are not diagnostic and require virus isolation and identification to make a definitive diagnosis. Some strains of AI viruses have shown the ability to change from low to high virulence that complicates control programs. Dealing with AI has focused on one of three goals: prevention, management (control) and eradication. The goal selected depends on the virus strain and country. Infections in humans by AI viruses have been reported.
