Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is an immunosuppressive virus which targets chicken IgM+, B-cells. It is speculated that these cells are immature IgM+, B-cells. Chickens were vaccinated at 3 days of age with an intermediate classical vaccine and challenged at 22 days of age with the Edgar strain. Bursa and spleen samples were analyzed by Flow cytometry and ELISA. Flow cytometry analysis of bursa samples showed two IgM+, B-cell subpopulations: A and B. The only reduction of B-cells was observed in IgM+, B-cell, subpopulation B. Reduction of IgG+, IgA+, B-cells in bursa and spleen was not observed. IgA+, B-cells in bursa and IgM+, B-cells in spleen increased 14 days post-infection. Levels of total serum IgM, IgA IgG, and anti-IBDV immunoglobulin will be evaluated.
