Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Phytophthora nicotianae is a serious pathogen of many crop species.and is highly problematic for ornamental plant production. Restrictions on the use of chemical soil fumigants and the risk of inducing resistance in P. nicotianae populations through the regular application of systemic fungicides necessitate the use of other control measures for this pathogen. Experiments were performed in the greenhouse to determine the effect of biopesticide, microbial inoculant, and biorational product applications and fertilizer levels (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0%) on the severity P. nicotianae infection in periwinkle. Treatment and fertilizer level had significant effects on disease severity but there was no interaction effect between the two factors. Only the application of phosphonate-containing products resulted in significant disease reduction. Disease was also less severe in plants that received 0 and 0.5% fertilizer. It is possible to control greenhouse infections of P. nicotianae through the application of phosphonates and lower fertilizer levels.
