Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Nutrition monitoring in the U.S. includes the assessment of nutrient intakes and food sources of nutrients. Within the last decade, monitoring results have included intakes of American diets in terms of USDA Food Guide Pyramid servings. Pyramid serving measures are produced through FoodLink, the Agricultural Research Service's research tool for translating foods into ingredients and commodities. The objective of this research is to report nutrient intakes by Pyramid food groups. This required enhancement of the USDA Pyramid Servings Database in order to assign nutrient values to each food by Pyramid food group. Using this new database, intake estimates based on two days of food intakes from 18,071 individuals 2 years and older were calculated from the combined 1994-96 and 1998 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals. Tabulated results include mean nutrient intakes and percent contributions for selected nutrients by 30 Pyramid food groups and by sex-age categories for children 2 through 9 years of age and all individuals 2 years of age and older. These are the first known nutrient intake estimates by Pyramid food groups. This data will provide government, academic and professional groups additional information needed to evaluate and monitor diet quality and trends.
