Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Newly introduced rice germplasm and selected reference cultivars were evaluated in artificially inoculated greenhouse tests with individual blast races at Stuttgart, AR and field nurseries established with inoculation of blast race-mixture, and with inoculation of sheath blight isolates during the 2002 growing season. Fifty promising entries exhibited excellent greenhouse resistance to defined P. grisea races IB-1, IB-49, IC-17, IE-1, IG-1, and IH-1. These entries also exhibited almost complete resistance to leaf and panicle blast in the test nursery located in the University of Arkansas Pine Tree Branch Experiment Station, Pine Tree, AR. Although several entries appeared to have sheath blight tolerance in the test nursery located in the University of Arkansas Rice Research and Extension Center, Stuttgart, AR, additional testing is necessary to evaluate the role of an open plant canopy and/or a late maturity.
