Interpretive Summary: Many species of xylomyid flies are beneficial to agriculture in that the larvae help to decompose plant material. The information contained in this publication helps to define and clarify a new species of Asian fly. This information and the included illustrations will assist in the accurate identification of xylomyid flies from Asia and will be of use to regulatory personnel charged with keeping pest insects out of the U.S. and to scientists working on fly taxonomy.

Technical Abstract: Solva kinabalu, new species, is described from Mt. Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia (northern Borneo). Diagnostic illustrations are provided. The male has a highly modified first antennal flagellomere, which is sexually dimorphic. This is the first instance of secondary sexual modification reported in the Xylomyidae, and is speculated to be functional in male-male interactions.
