Technical Abstract: Biodiesel is an alternative fuel derived from transesterification of agricultural lipids (vegetable oils or animal fats) with a simple alcohol such as methanol. Recently, the formulation of aviation fuels with biodiesel has been proposed as a feasible approach for reducing harmful ground level emissions from commercial, military and general aviation sources. This work explores the advantages and disadvantages of blending biodiesel (methyl soyate) with jet fuel. Two concerns were identified for this work: cold flow properties and oxidative stability of blends. Blend ratios as low as 10 vol% methyl soyate in JP-8 fuel exhibited significant increases in cloud and freezing point. Fuel cold flow properties are crucial in determining how high in elevation aircraft operate. With respect to analysis of the oil stability index (OSI), results showed that increasing blend ratio decreases relative stability. In addition, OSI results showed that storage temperatures below 50ºC are recommended for storage of blends with up to 30% methyl soyate in JP-8 fuel.
