Technical Abstract: Bioblends are polymer blends in which at least one of the components is a biodegradable polymer of synthetic or natural origin. The thermal properties of binary blends of polystyrene (PS) with biodegradable polyesters were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The biodegradable esters were polylactic acid (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), and poly(tetramethylenemadipate-co-terephthalate) also known under the trade name Eastar Bio Ultra® (EBU). Blends comprising the full range of compositions in 25% increments were investigated. Each set of binary blend showed its own unique thermal stability profile. The thermal stabilities of the blends were found to be highly dependent on both the chemistry and composition of the biodegradable polyester in the blend. DSC measurements showed two Tgs for PCL/PS and EBU/PS blends, and a single Tg for PLA/PS blends. The implications of these and other observations of this investigation on bioblend properties will be explored.
