Technical Abstract: Recent research related to the development of female-biased synthetic food-based attractants for fruit flies offers considerable opportunities for fruit fly management programs. Facile trapping systems for detecting, delimiting the Mediterranean fruit fly have been tested and are being used globally. Several countries are also using female-biased attractant for management of the Mediterranean fruit fly as an alternative to pesticides. Current research is being conducted with 14 countries via an IAEA-sponsored effort to determine the utility of the new attractant for detection of other fruit flies, particularly those in the genera Anastrepha and Bactrocera. The presentation will review results from these studies.
