Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Yeasts have been isolated from insects in many different families. Many of these yeasts have been shown to improve insect nutrition and to detoxify plant chemicals to which the insect is exposed. In this chapter, various examples of insect associations with yeasts are presented and their possible origin as insect endosymbionts is discussed.
