Nutrition Today. 40(4):189-195. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: While the effects of chromium on glucose and insulin metabolism are well documented, the specific and mechanistic effects of chromium on insulin function, atypical depression, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and gestational and steroid-induced diabetes are just emerging. New research also demonstrates an inverse relationship of toenail chromium and cardiovascular disease in studies from both the US and Europe. There have been more than 30 studies demonstrating that dietary intake of chromium may be suboptimal which has led to approximately 10 percent of the population taking supplements containing chromium. The safety of chromium is well documented and one form of chromium, chromium picolinate, has now been approved to be added to foods and is on the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list. |
