Technical Abstract: Forty-eight samples of date palms (Phoenix dactylifera L.) collected from eight locations in Egypt were studied using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers with near Infrared fluorescence labeled primers. Four primer sets were used in the study: IRD700 E+TA/M+CAG, IRD800 E+AC/M+CAG, IRD700 E+TG/M+CAT, and IRD800 E+AG/M+CAT. These samples belonged to 25 cultivars and 6 with unknown pedigrees. This is the first study of Egyptian date palms using AFLP markers. We will discuss the results and implication for future date palm germplasm collection and preservation in Egypt. This study also demonstrated the efficiency of AFLP in date palm cultivars identification and germplasm evaluation.
