Technical Abstract: 'Oklee' is a hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (Reg. no. CV ___, PI ______) cultivar developed and released by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station in cooperation with USDA-ARS in January, 2003. Oklee was released because of its combination of high grain yield, earliness, high grain weight per bushel, high grain protein content, and moderate reaction to Fusarium head blight (FHB, caused by Fusarium graminearum). It was derived from the cross 2375/SBF0670. Both of these lines were from the former Pioneer Hi-Bred spring wheat breeding program in the U.S. The cultivar '2375' has the pedigree OLAF//ERA/SUQAMUX168/3/CIS/ND487//LARK and was widely grown in Minnesota during the mid-1990's due its moderate reaction to FHB. SBF0670 is an unreleased line whose pedigree contains hard red spring lines once prominent in the region including 'Chris', 'Era', and 'Butte'. Oklee has white glumes with an apiculate shoulder and an acuminate beak. The spike is awned, mid-dense, and tapering. The kernel is red in color and ovate in shape with angular cheeks and a narrow, mid-deep crease. The brush on the kernel has a collar and is medium in length. Oklee has a moderate reaction to FHB in field nurseries, similar to the reaction of 2375. Oklee is resistant to currently prevalent races of stem rust (caused by Puccinia graminis Pers.: Pers.) as a seedling (Cereal Disease Laboratory isolate no. HJCS, QFBS, QSHS, RKQS, RTQQ, RTQS) and to field isolates. It is moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina Eriks.) depending upon the races present. Oklee is moderately resistant to tan spot (caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Died.) Drechs.) based on greenhouse assays. Field reaction to the foliar diseases tan spot and Septoria tritici blotch (caused by Septoria tritici Roberge ex Desmaz.) is moderate, better than 2375. The USDA Spring Wheat laboratory, Fargo, NS evaluated bread making qualities of Oklee grown in yield trial plots from 1998 to 2001. Oklee has greater grain protein and loaf volume compared to Oxen and 2375. Oklee was somewhat lower in quality than the high quality check Grandin, with a 3.3 rating vs. 4.0 for Grandin.
